Tips to Prepare for Exams

Getting Ready
Being prepared for a test can relieve some of your jitters and can make test taking a lot easier! Here are some tips to help you get ready.

  • Take good notes in class and keep up with assignments, so you don’t have to learn the material at the last minute! Just writing down the notes helps you remember the information.
  • Make a study schedule and stick to it! Don’t watch TV or listen to distracting music while studying.
  • Start reviewing early if you can – don’t wait until the night before the test.
  • Go over the headings, summaries and questions in each chapter to review key points. Read your notes and highlight the most important topics.
  • Take study breaks so you can concentrate and stay alert.
  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast before the test.

The Big Event

Follow these suggestions for smooth sailing during test time:

  • Take a deep breath and relax! That will help calm your nerves.
  • If you are allowed, skim through the entire exam so you know what to expect and how long it may take.
  • As you start each part of the exam, read directions carefully.
  • Read each question carefully before answering. For multiple choice questions, check every possible answer before you decide on one. The best answer could be the last one.
  • Don’t spend too much time on any one question. Skip hard questions and go back to them at the end.
  • Keep track of time so you can pace yourself. Use any time left at the end to go back and review your answers. Make sure you’ve written the answer you meant to select.
